About the Citizens Initiative

The state of California permits residents to place measures on the ballot during regularly scheduled elections. The Citizens to Save the Hospital committee is adhering to the process outlined under state law, which began by filing a Notice of Intent to Circulate Petition with County’s Election Department. Another step in the process is for County Counsel to prepare a title and summary of the initiative, which read as follows:

AN INITIATIVE TO ADOPT A TRANSACTIONS AND USE (SALES) TAX OF 1% FOR 40 YEARS TO DESIGN, CONSTRUCT AND EQUIP A NEW JOHN C. FREMONT HOSPITAL

The purpose of this initiative is to adopt a transactions and use (sales) tax of one percent (1%) for a period of forty (40) years to generate the funds needed by the John C. Fremont Healthcare District (District) to design, construct and equip a new community hospital that meets all applicable seismic safety and other building standards, and to modify and repurpose existing District facilities, including the existing hospital, Ewing Wing, main and satellite clinics, and administrative offices, to better satisfy the current and future healthcare needs of Mariposa County residents and visitors. The District will need to meet strict accountability and transparency requirements for generating periodic reports to the public.
